In a surprising development, the Himachal Pradesh BJP state executive announced the appointment of Bihari Lal Sharma on key post as the Mahamantri (General Secretary) in their team. The decision came as a shock to many, given Sharma’s vast organizational experience and long-standing dedication to the party.
Sharma’s journey in politics began decades ago when he became a whole-time worker for ABVP (Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad). He steadily climbed the ranks within the organization, serving as the state organizing secretary of ABVP in Himachal Pradesh. Later, he held the position of North India organizing secretary, further cementing his influence in the region.
Notably, Sharma played a pivotal role in mobilizing the youth of the state and was the mastermind behind the rise of the “bhagwa” (saffron) movement when Congress and left-wing ideologies held considerable sway in Himachal Pradesh’s politics and educational institutions.
Currently, Bihari Lal Sharma represents the Mamel ward of Karsog constituency in Mandi district as an elected member of the Zila Parishad. His success and popularity have led to demands within the BJP for a Brahmin leader to represent the Mandi parliamentary constituency, left vacant after the unfortunate demise of former MP Ram Swaroop Sharma. Many believe that Sharma would be an excellent choice for the candidate of BJP from Mandi parlimentey constituency .
The appointment of Bihari Lal Sharma as the Mahamantri reflects the party’s recognition of his invaluable contributions and capabilities. As he takes on this new responsibility, his experience and strong hold in the youth of Himachal Pradesh are likely to further strengthen the BJP’s position in the state’s political landscape.
