In his second budget presentation today, Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukkhu unveiled a budget of ₹58,444 crore, focusing on strengthening the rural economy of the state and announcing several schemes for the welfare of employees and pensioners. The budget, presented ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, emphasizes bolstering agriculture, healthcare, education, and sports sectors with the announcement of seven new schemes and three new policies. Chief Minister Sukkhu emphasized that the budget reflects the vision of self-reliant Himachal Pradesh, catering to the needs of every section of society, with a particular emphasis on strengthening the rural economy. Measures to enhance climate-resilient agriculture have been introduced, including setting minimum support prices for wheat and maize for the first time. Additionally, monthly support prices have been set for milk from cows and buffaloes to increase income for dairy farmers.

However, the opposition criticized the budget, deeming it disappointing for the people of Himachal Pradesh. They argued that the budget neglects the youth, women’s empowerment, and farmers’ concerns, with no mention of farmers or guarantees in the budget. Although the price of buffalo milk was discussed at ₹100, and cow milk at ₹80, the increase was minimal. The budget also falls short in promoting organic farming and fails to mention providing ₹1500 to women, which they consider a disrespect. Senior BJP leader, MLA Vipin Singh Parmar labeled the government as insensitive, highlighting the absence of budget provisions for any scheme. Natural disasters are being discussed, and while the central government has extended assistance, the state government has misused it. People have realized their mistake, and they will not repeat it in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, holding the government accountable for its promises.

The unveiling of the budget underscores the government’s commitment to bolstering the state’s economy, particularly in rural areas, and introducing welfare measures. While the budget has received criticism from the opposition for its perceived shortcomings, it remains a pivotal document shaping the state’s trajectory in the coming years, especially in the lead-up to the elections.
