Rising Cyber Fraud in Hamirpur: Over ₹105 Crore Swindled in Three Years

Vishal Rana, Hamirpur

The district is witnessing a worrying surge in cyber fraud cases, with over ₹105 crore being swindled in the past three years through various online scams. According to official records, 703 cases of cyber crime have been registered in the district on the online cyber crime portal and at various police stations.

SP Hamirpur, Bhagat Singh, made this revelation during a press conference on Friday. He highlighted how cunning fraudsters are constantly devising new ways to deceive people. SP Singh disclosed details of the cyber fraud incidents from the past three years and emphasized that drug-related crimes and cyber fraud are among the most significant challenges today. Fraudsters are employing various tactics, such as luring victims with promises of clearing customs on gifts, fake job offers, and schemes to double their money instantly. Even expectant mothers are being tricked under the guise of depositing government funds into their bank accounts. Most frauds are reported after victims share their OTP over the phone. SP Singh advised people not to share OTPs associated with their bank accounts online with anyone. Additionally, fraudsters are using AI to mimic the voices and videos of relatives to deceive victims. He urged people to exercise caution before transferring money online, even to relatives. If one falls prey to cyber fraud, they should immediately contact the helpline at 1930.

SP Bhagat Singh announced the formation of a dedicated Cyber Cell team in the district to tackle cyber crimes. This team will thoroughly investigate cyber crime-related cases and has received training at the Cyber Police Station in Mandi. People can reach the district cyber cell at the contact number 01972 222053. Soon, this three-member team will offer a 24/7 mobile contact service.

In the district’s various police stations, reports indicate financial losses of ₹1.17 crore from 17 complaints in 2022, ₹1.38 crore from 19 complaints in 2023, and so far in 2024, ₹3.28 crore from 13 complaints.
