A Tribute to social service: Daankwali Chowk Renamed as Kashmiri Lal Handa Chowk

Vishal Rana, Hamirpur

In a heartfelt tribute to the legacy of Late Shri Kashmiri Lal Handa, the Hamirpur Municipal Council has decided to rename Dunkwali Chowk in Hamirpur as “Kashmiri Lal Handa Chowk.” Shri Handa, a prominent figure in Hamirpur’s civic and social landscape, served as the President and Vice-President of the Municipal Council. Over his distinguished career, he was elected as a councilor multiple times: once from Ward No. 6, once from Ward No. 8, and four times from Ward No. 4. Recognizing his invaluable contributions to the development of Hamirpur, the council has immortalized his name at this bustling intersection.

Daankwali Chowk, home to the Block Development Officer’s office and the Horticulture Department’s distribution center, sees a constant influx of visitors. However, the area previously lacked basic amenities for public convenience. With its renaming, the Municipal Council is undertaking a significant facelift of the chowk, including the installation of benches, high-quality lighting, and provisions for drinking water, ensuring a comfortable space for residents and visitors alike.

Kashmiri Lal Handa was a beacon of selfless service and an exemplary leader. During his tenure as Municipal Council President and councilor, he played a pivotal role in the city’s growth and development. Beyond his civic duties, he served for decades in the Hamirpur Ramlila Committee and held the esteemed position of State President of the Himachal Pradesh Swarnkaar Sangh. Handa also contributed as a member of the Pollution Control Board during Professor Prem Kumar Dhumal’s government.

A true philanthropist at heart, Shri Handa dedicated his life to the welfare of society, particularly the underprivileged. He facilitated the marriages of countless underprivileged girls and provided assistance to hundreds of needy individuals. Remarkably, unlike many who seek publicity for their charitable acts, Shri Handa’s generosity remained humble and genuine.

Expressing gratitude on behalf of the family, Shri Handa’s son, Rakesh Handa, thanked the administration for this honor. He affirmed that his brothers Vijay Handa , Suresh Handa & whole family remains committed to following kashmiri Lal Handa’s path of selfless service and continues to contribute meaningfully to society.

The renaming of Dunkwali Chowk as Kashmiri Lal Handa Chowk is not just a tribute but a reminder of the enduring impact of Shri Handa’s contributions. His life is a testament to the power of selfless service, humility, and dedication to community welfare, serving as an inspiration for generations to come.
